Gee, if they want to pick a fight…

I’m appalled at the emboldened rhetoric of the latest evangelical coalition, this time made up of the same Mormon and Christian ultra-rightists who poured millions of dollars into the effort to pass California’s Proposition 8.  According to this article, the religious group plans to apply the same dishonest scare tactics — which seemed to serve it so well on Prop 8 — in other marriage battles to come:

Leaders of the successful Proposition 8 campaign say an unusual coalition of evangelical Christians, Mormons and Roman Catholics built a majority at the polls Tuesday by harnessing the organizational muscle of churches to a mainstream message about what schoolchildren might be taught about gay relationships if the ban failed.

Campaign operatives attribute their success to the churches, which served as voter registration centers, phone banks and volunteer recruitment hubs.

Really.  Well guess what, fundies: history is on the side of expanding rights, not taking them away.  Your pathological need to prevent loving gay couples from marrying is doomed to failure.  It may take a while longer, but ultimately the fear and disinformation you sow will have less and less impact on new generations of young adults who can’t be bothered with wasting time and resources on preventing marriage equality.  So form your coalitions, encourage your followers to spend their money supporting the cause of intolerance, and hide behind your government-recognized nonprofit status.  One day folks will look back and wonder just what the fuss was all about.  Eventually you will be marginalized when religious people of a more moderate strain recognize that in a civil democratic society, politics and religion should be less entwined, not more.
