Fascinating Civil War photo

I’m not sure why I like this photo so much.  Maybe it’s the dissonance between the cocky stance of the Confederate soldiers and the reality of their situation as prisoners of war.

Notice their gauntness… this was definitely a harrowing period in American history.  But these men still exuded a sense of pride, and they probably believed strongly in the rightness of their cause.  Yes, even though they were on the wrong side of history, their stubbornness and steadfast adherence to an unjust culture seem peculiarly American.

July 1863. “Gettysburg, Pa. Three captured Confederate soldiers, likely from Louisiana, pose for Mathew Brady on Seminary Ridge following the Battle of Gettysburg.”
